AIRMEN ON LEAVE
NEW FERRY SERVICE A service for airmen on leave from Whenuapai and Hobsonville air bases, announced by Sir Ernest Davis, chairman of directors of the Devonport Steam Ferry Company, Limited, began last evening, and was well patronised.
A ferry will leave Hobsonville every Wednesday and Friday evening at 6.15, returning from Auckland at 11.25 p.m., and on Saturdays will leave Hobsonville at 1 p.m., returning at 11 p.m. on Sundays from Auckland.
Prior to the commencement of the servi.ee it was necessary to place a beacon light on a rock opposite Beach Haven, and to dredge near the Hobsonville wharf so that the ferry could tie up there regardless of the tide. Formerly the only methods the airmen had of getting into the city when on leave were by launch or by road. The ferry can carry about 500 men, and takes about threequarters of an hour to complete a trip.
