BRAVE PILOT'S END
Forced To Bail Out In Combat Over Malta SOX OF AIRCRAFT DESIGNER Rec. 12.30 p.m. RUGBY, Oct. 17. The story of the death of the third son of the designer of the Blenheim and Beaufort aircraft, who himself was killed a few years ago while testing his new aircraft, is given in the Air Ministry news service. At dawn on October 14 David Barnwell was flying a Hurricane to engage enemy aircraft, protected by a strong Covering force, which was raiding Malta.
Shortly after Barnwell had left the ground a listener in the fighter control room heard his voice over the wireless telephone saying: "Tallvho! Tally-ho! Got one! Got one!" and five minutes later he heard the voice saying: "I am baling out. Engine cut. I am baling out and am coming down in the sea."
For 14 hours rescue craft and aircraft searched the seas but could find no trace of the pilot. Barnwell was awarded the D.F.C. a month ago after he had shot down two Italian three-engined bombers in one night over Malta. One of his brothers I was killed with a bomber squadron, the other while flying night fighters.
