UNUSUAL EXCUSE
FOR NOT ENROLLING For failing to enrol in the first division of the National Reserve, Daniel James McLeod (28), single, was sent to prison for seven days by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Police Court. He pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Macnamara said McLeod's excuse was that the woman with whom he boarded told him it was not advisable for him to go overseas. "He was not registered under the Social Security Act and has not paid any levies since 1934," added the sub-inspector.
McLeod told the magistrate he was willing to enter camp and that the real reason he did not register in the reserve was that he had not paid his levies and was afraid.
Charged with employing McLeod when he was not enrolled, Cecil Munro Emanuel pleaded guilty. SubInspector Macnamara said defendant had employed McLeod in a racing stable. "In fairness to Mr. Emanuel it must be said on his behalf that McLeod told him that he was enrolled," added Mr. Macnamara. Mr. Luxford: There is a duty on all employers to see that men who work for them are registered. Had this been a deliberate offence—and I am sure it was not—the penalty would have been a substantial one."j A iiqe of £5 was imposed. 1
