"TILL WAR IS ENDED"
MOTION FOR ADJOURNMENT
CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, Tuesday. An unusual proceeding was attempted and defeated at a session of the Conciliation Council to-day, at which the commissioner, Mr. S. Ritchie, presided. The dispute was between the Otago and Swthland Hairdressers and Tobacconists' Assistants' Union, and employers.
At the opening, Mr. V. S. Jacobs, one of the employers' assessors, moved: "That this meeting of the Conciliation Council be adjourned till the World War is ended." He gave his reasons for the motion, which was opposed by the representatives of the union.
After discussion, Mr. Ritchie said he would put the motion, though I it was the first he had put in ten years. In his opinion, it was not according to law. He voted against it on the grounds that it was outside the business of the council to stop proceedings that had legally gone the full journey to that stage. The council proceeded to itp normal business, with the result thati agreement was reached on all t points, except the hours of work and [ wages, which were referred to the Arbitration Court.
