ONE MORE BILL
DAY OF PROGRESS
MR. FRASER'S APPEAL
BUSINESS SPEEDED UP (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Progress was made by the House of Representatives yesterday, two important measures and the Supplementary Estimates being disposed of during normal sitting hours.
Preliminary tmsiness occupied the first half-hour of the afternoon session. The Supplementary Estimates were then introduced, and the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, asked the House to pass the War Damage Bill and the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill and approve the Supplementary Estimates before adjourning for the night.
This request met with a good response, and the measures and the Estimates passed off the Order Paper, although there were several interesting discussions while they were being considered. Probably the most interesting of these was contributed by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash, while the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill was being read a second time. When dealing with the clause which alters tax assessment on trading banks, Mr. Nash expressed the opinion that the trading banks were doing the work they had to do as well as it could be done, and that consequently there was no need for the frequently suggested State control of banks.
Mr. Nash also paid a tribute to the banks for the way in which they had assisted in managing the country's affairs.
At the evening sitting the War Damage Bill went through the committee stages with little discussion, and was read a third time and passed, while there was no committee discussion at all on the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill, which was also put through all stages just before the adjournment of the House.
The measures left on the Order Paper are mostly of a washing-up variety, but before the House rose Mr. Fraser announced that he hoped to introduce the Rehabilitation Bill to-day. So far ais is known, this is the only remaining measure of major interest for this session.
