Wellington citizens turned out in strength at mid-day and gave a rousing welcome to a contingent of naval men who have been serving overseas. Headed by a band, the sailors marched through cheering crowds and showers of confetti along Lambton Quay and Willis Street to the Town Hall, where they were entertained at a luncheon which was given jointly by the City Council and Harbour Board.
The welcome of the citizens was expressed by the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, and the chairman of the Harbour Board, Mr. \Y. H. Price.
The Government's welcome and congratulations upon their splendid overseas record was voiced by the acting-Prime Minister, Mr. Nash, and the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones.
A message from the First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. Alexander, warmly commending the officers and men upon their magnificent war record, was read by Mr. Nash. Captain Bevan replied. Among those present were Commodore Parry, Captain Fanshawe, Paymaster-Captains N. T. P. Cooper and N. H. Deall. Wing-Commander Bevan, A.D.C., Sir Harry Batterbee, and Brigadier Weir, "representing Major-General Puttick.
