The final British and Russian Note has been presented to Iran, demanding unconditional surrender of all Germans for internment, reports the Sunday Times diplomatic correspondent. Several hundred Germans have taken refuge in the German Legation compound at Teheran, but many young Germans are wandering freely around the city boasting that Germany will win the war.
When over a week ago the Iranians gave up resistance, the Allies produced the lirst broad scheme for a settlement, but by a curious lapse no clear provision was made for speedily shutting the German Legation. which was the headquarters of the German Fifth Column.
Since then the Germans have quickly recovered from their initial fright and have ssttled down to their normal life, driving around in highpowered cars, hanging out swastikas and also cutting a figure in business houses, in addition to insulting British passers-by and spreading anti-Allied rumours. Indeed, they are behaving exactly as expected by those in England who protested against the apparent respite afforded the Germans.
The Times adds that presumably the new Note will remedv the situa tion.
The Daily Telegraph diplomatic correspondent says the Iranian Government is showing some hesitation in meeting the demands as regards the Germans.
Reuter's Teheran correspondent reports that all the important oil wells have been brought under British protection by the advance of the Indian troops to Sultanabad, on the trans-Persian railway. The occupation of Sultanabad" gives the British a second point of control on the most important link between the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf
