EPSOM TROTS

AUGUST HANDICAP ! | BETTY BOOP FAILS i CHARLES REX PAYS WELL j Rain was falling when the Auek-, land Trotting Club's August meeting. ■ postponed from last Saturday on j account of heavy rain, was he id at. Alexandra Park to-day. The tract: j was very heavy and the attendance ' fair. | _ .. ... I

Favourite Succeeds . ! The favourite. Alvis. who was j bracketed with Baby Triumph, won ; the opening event, the Introductory i Handicap, in a close finish with Stee; ] King, but the pair were both lucky ■ to beat Bon Haven, who was badly i boxed in on the rails over the last i two furlongs, and before the pose j was reached he had to be eased up ; and pulled to the outside :n at": . attempt to get clear. It was then j too late and he had to be content j with third. The early leader was, Great Trust from Crown Thorpe, but they had not gone far before Great) Trust and Alvis were the leader< t from Steel King. Crown Thorpe and ; Gold Kip. At the stand with aj round to go Alvis and Great Trust: were almost together, with Steel; King still third, but a; the half mile l Alvis had taken charge and just leci! a bunch of half a dozen which in- 1 eluded Great Trust. Steel King. Goi'i 1 Kip, Bon Haven and Esther. Alvis j was first to turn for home with Bon j Haven, snowed in on the fence, next, i Alvis withstood a strong challenge I from Steel King and won by a neck. ; with the unlucky Bon Haven a : length and a quarter away. Gold! Kip was fourth followed by Great l Trust and Crown Thorpe. !

Charles Rex Surprises A surprise was recorded in the first division of the Mount Eden Handicap, which was run in heavy rain, when the little-fancied Charles Rex. one of J. T. Paul's team, went to the front just after the start and was never headed. He was always doing his part nicely and his advantage was never really threatened, although the hopes of the backers of the favourite. Oxford, were always high. as the chestnut was racing in second place all the way till within a few yards of the post, when Rockfel finished strongly to secure second money. Gallant" Maid paced a good race, being close up to Charles Rex and Oxford throughout the whole of the race and eventually finished fifth, only weakening in the last furlong. Exporter >vas another to go a good race and was always in the first five, eventually finishing just behind the placed horses. Rockfel was sixth into the straight and did well to beat all but the winner. Free Machine j paced nicely but did not stay on. and the others were well sprung out with :half the journey covered- The win- | ner paid a good double-figure dividend.

Third Favourite Scores In the second division of the Mount Eden Handicap Northern Smile, at one stage, had such a commanding lead, about 15 lengths, that her victory seemed certain, but two furlongs from home it could be seen that she was tiring but she still was well clear entering the straight. It was then that Erua Peter and Cvone Girl began to ctose on her. and Cyone Girl looked like hitting the front, but made a mistake in the last furlong which settled her chances. Erua Peter, who had been running about sixth in the middle stages, was up third at the straight entrance, and getting a good run on the rails, looked like getting through but was checked and had to pull out and then finish on and beat the tiring Northern Smile by half a length. County Jewel, who was always in a fair position over the last couple of furlongs was a good third and Cyone Girl next. Press Gang and Auto" Bingen were following. Eyenew failed to settle down at the start and was soon near the rear of a strung out field. She showed plenty of speed in patches afterwards, but another break durinc the running counted her out.

Decisive Win I In front with over a round to sco the Our Thome gelding. Our McKirney. afterwards gave nothing a ! chance in the August Handicap, and he scored a decisive win over the back-marker. Josedale Grattan. who ran a great race, making up a lot , of ground in the last half mile. How-i ever, although he battled on gamely, i he had no chance of to the ' winner, and it was onlv bv a short head that he cut Three" Bells out of second money. Bettv Boop was in second place with Three Bells for most of the way. but she made one mistake and lost her chance when the straight was entered, althoueh she eventually finished fifth, wide out. Kewpie's Queen was ahvavs in the picture and went a fairlv 'good race to be fourth at the end. but Ringtrue. Our Jewel, Uenuku. Musketeer and Bronze Queen never ; threatened danger over the last three furlongs. Noble Prince was never going right and was a furlong behind the field.
