THREE-YEAR-OLDS IN THE NEW ZEALAND CUP
Indigo Was Last Winner In 1914 A prejudice exists against running three-year-olds in the New Zealand Cup, and present-day trainers view the position with different eyes from those of bygone years. A three-year-old has not won the New Zealand Cup since Indigo dead-heated with Warstep in 1914. One reason is the fact that since then, they have very seldom been starters. When Noctuiform won in 1905 he made a useful handicap field look rather ordinary He .also won the New Zealand Derby and Canterbury Cup. Seahorse won the New Zealand Cup and Canterbury Cup and trained on to start years afterwards in the Liverpool Grand National. Euroclydon won the "triple crown" in 1895, and the following season the Otago Cup with 9.6, and ran second to Lady Zetland in the New Zealand Cup and Canterbury Cup. Canteen ran in the New Zealand Cup at three and four years and won as a three-year-old. St. Hippo won as a three-year-old, and the same season won the Auckland Cup with 8.9. As a six-year-old St. Hippo ran second with 9.9 to Anita, 6.9, in the Auckland Cup. Winning the Melbourne Cup as a three-year-old did not stop Sasanof from being one of the best of his day. Peter Pan won as a three-year-old, and again at five years with 9.10. Of course, a great deal depends on the horse and a very great deal on the trainer.
