FIRST THREE-YEAR-OLD CLASSIC

Foreign Coin Wins Wanganui Guineas From Par Avion: Rakanui All the Way in the Higgie Handicap

(P.A-) PALMERSTON N., this day

The second day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting was held in dull weather. After rain this morning the track was heavier than on Thursday. There was a large attendance.

Majority's Run-away The former smart sprinter Majority made a one-horse race of the Gonville Hack Hurdles, thus scoring his first win in his new sphere of activities. His trainer, Ashley Jenkins, took him two lengths clear of Vengeance directly the barrier was released, and over the first half of the journey, Lucullus Boy. Rollicker, Clover lea King and Cuisinier were handy. Master Solway then fell and the favourite. Raana. toppled over him. Majority shortly afterwards increased his lead to eight lengths and was not troubled to win by six lengths from Lucullus Boy. who beat Cuisinier by half a head for second. Colibri and Vengeance, some lengths back, were next.

Fesciif Disappoints The Synerium colt. Fescue brought to the races a reputation for extreme speed, but that was all the speed he left at home. He was backed down to odds on for the Debutant Stakes and had every chance of commencing smartly, but the Spiral youngester Damask was always galloping better on the inside of him and won with a lot in reserve by four lengths. Fescue had had enough at the home turn and Canine had no difficulty in defeating him by two lengths for second. Manutere, the other Synerium in the event, always tailed oft. _

Won Easing Up Foreign Coin, a smart performer in the early part of last season, literally spreadeagled the field in the straight in the Wanganui Guineas, for which he was only fifth in the order of betting. C. J. Goulsbro took him up to the leader, Premature, at the half-mile, where Burra Sahib was a couple of lengths behind, just in front of Kevin and Par Avion. Once the home turn was reached, Premature compounded and Foreign Coin, revelling in the heavy track, went right away to win easing up by three lengths. Par Avion finished on gamely and had no difficulty in defeating Burra Sahib by a couple of lengths for second place. Kevin was fourth and Premature fifth. Sectional times were:—Three furlongs. 41 2-ss; half mile, 54 2-ss; five furlongs, 1.8 3-5; last three-in 39 l-ss. Aqueduct by a Nose The Trial Handicap resulted in a thrilling finish between the placed horses, the favourite, Aqueduct, just getting up on the rails to win by a nose from Spliced, with Graeco Roman a similar distance away. It was a splendid performance on the part of the winner, and he showed 'such rare gameness to finish on under the whip from fifth position at the straight entrance that he must enter Derby calculations. Graeco Roman, Raeon and Spliced made most of the running to the turn, where Courting moved round smartly to join the leaders at the distance. Aqueduct challenged on the rails, and in a rare struggle the leaders crossed the line almost on terms. Roman failed in the last few stritl-

Courting and Rowon were a coui of lengths behind the placed horset,. lied All the Way Rakanui staged an end to end win in the Higgle Handicap. The five-year-old Hunting Song gelding was bowling along nicely under a strong hold half a' length in front of Lord Cavetidlsh, with Pekoe, Proclamation, Mea Mea, and Lambourn handy for the first mjle, but at the furlong pole Ashley Jenkins gave the topweight a little urging and he then went away to win as he liked by four lengths from Lord Cavendish. The only other Change in the final sprint wai that Aurora's Star ran past the beaten horses to get within half a neck Of Lord Cavendish. Proclamation and Lambourh ftere the next to finlth.

Only a Nose In It Sustaining a strong run from the home turn, Kanui Te Pai and Red Dash fought out a magnificent finish irt the Moutoa Hack, the former getting the verdict by a nose, with Ail Bunsby a length away. All Bunsby trailed Auburn Lad, Great Night, Halley and Inform until they were racing for the home stretch and he then went smartly round the leaders to be a length clear when they straightened up. Red Dash and Kanui Te Pai then singled themselves out to chase the leader. AUburn Lad was fourth, just ahead of Halley, who found his heavy Weight too much. Finishing with a great burst of speed on the outside, Duncannon ran past six horses from the straight entrance to Win the Owen Handicap going away by three-quarters of a lehgth. Battlegain soon took the Iflftd and showed the way round the track from Screen Star, Augment, P6utautau' Wings of Song and Star Zone, who were racing in close order. Battlegain was still a length clear at the distance, but Augment and Poutautau then put in a claim and were a!tno§t level when Duncannon flashed up. Augment just shaded Battlegain for second, Poutautau weakening in the last few yards into fotirth, ahead of Screen Star and Star Zone.
