CASH CYCLING

One-legged Junior Leads From Start to Finish Excellent conditions prevailed for road racing last Saturday when the Auckland and Metropolitan Clubs held their fortnightly club events. Auckland held an 18-mile handicap in place of the teams' race set down on its programme, because the riders present did not make for wellbalanced teams. A remarkable ride by the one-legged junior Bob Manson (off a 12.0 mark) was the highlight of the race, as he led from end to end to win easily bv a margin of nearly three.minutes.

At halfway Manson was 4.0 ahead of Hayson (5.0) and Edkins (6.0). bi't here the lrjt-named turned too wide and finifbjMtip in the ditch. Then followed #bunch off 3.0. closelv followed by&he 1.30 men. The scratch men Wade and Fish were 6.0 behind the leader. It was obvious at this stage that, barring trouble, Manson must win as he was going as strongly as anyone. The scratch pair finally caught all but the leader, for Wade to gain second place from Hayson.

Manson is certainly one of the wonders of the cycling sport to-day. He, like many others with a disability, has persevered to take honours in sport. Wade in gaining second place and fastest time, 46.7, got the nearest of the scratch men to winning this season. He has had one win, but this was off a 2.0 mark.

The surprise packet of the race was A. Hayson, who finished third. To outsprint such seasoned riders as Fish, Absolum, Gavin, Mathieson and Warson proves his ability. If he can learn to ride just a bit steadier! he should be a top-notcher later on. Veteran's Fine Effort The Metropolitan Club held a 30mile handicap for the cup donated by the Green Island Club, Dunedin. Redaway (late Pukekohe) was off the | limit of 11.0, with Hills and P. Bick- [ nell on scratch. E. Harrison and J. ! Huckstep off 6.0, teaming well, soon overhauled the leaders and then dominated the race. Huckstep, however, tired over the last .10 miles, and Harrison went on to score easily by half a minute from the scratch man D. Hills, with Bicknell well behind third. This made Harrison's second cup win on end, and without doubt this veteran rider is showing all his old dash.
