RACING NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE

After a spell from racing since the Great Northern meeting, Wharemanea is 1 due to compete in minor flat events at Avondale. The Lueullus gelding is in solid condition, and a few races on the flat should put him in fine trim for • racing over hurdles. Wharemanea showed ' great promise as a jumper last winter, " but failed in his only attempt in a flat event. At Avondale he will be meeting ' several speedy novices and will need to ' reveal a good. deal of improvement in ' order to win. ■ ' Few novices at Ellerslie display more I speed than Embassy, the three-year-old eon of Leighon and Lady Pym. He is to make his first appearance in public in the Trial Plate at Avondale. In that ( event Embassy will be meeting some , maiden candidates that have had a fair amount of experience, and they are likely to prove too solid for him over a seven- . furlong journey. | Mr. Deeds, in the same stable as Embassy, has made marked improvement during the past month and is one of the most forward two-year-olds at headquarters. He claims an engagement in the Avondale Stakes, to be decided next Saturday. The race that Clinch had in the spruit event at the Pakuranga meeting sharpened him up a good deal, and he is now hitting out much more freely. His next appearance will be in the Avondale Cup, and having won on two previous occasions on the suburban course, his prospects cannot be overlooked. There are few better stayers than Clinch, and E. George has the brown gelding in great order to undergo a solid preparation for spring racing. Since contesting the Jellicoe Handicap, in which his form was disappointing, Valmint has been given a let-up. It is practically certain the chestnut gelding will not be seen in action at the Avondale meeting. The two-year-old Master Cameron has benefited a good deal with the run he had in the two-year-old parade at the Pakuranga meeting. On Thursday morning this youngster shaped attractively hi a sprint over three furlongs, and he will have to be reckoned with in early two-year-old races. Master Cameron is engaged in the Avondale Stakes. The Ellerslie trainer F. Gilchrist lias a useful team of maiden candidates in his stable. They include Cherry's Ticket, Last Survey, Golden Pay, British Camp and Home Again, all of whom have had some racing experience. No fault can '|be found with the condition of any of • them, and each is endowed with sufficient ! speed to warrant their prospects of earning a winning bracket being far from remote. Worth Watching The latest track efforts of Phaleron clearly indicate that it will not be long before he is back to his best. This four-year-old looks all the better for the rate he had in the Admiralty Handicap fa«?t j • month, and it would not surprise to find him making an early return to the win- ' iiing list. Phaleron was a very smart and consistent performer as a two-year-old ■ and should be worth keeping in mind during the spring meetings. Belsander, a recent addition to W. J. 11 Fergus' team, gave a first-rate display ■ of jumping over hurdles at Ellerslie dur- ; ing the week. He has plenty of size, • and having had some racing experience ■ over fences, will be a welcome addition to the jumping brigade at headquarters. A novice that is showing distinct promise over hurdles is Nyola. a five-year-old mare by Jay from Lyrola. She has ■ not had much experience, but displays : a lot of confidence a beginner, and is J a natural jumper. Nyola is trained by ' F. L. Butterworth, who recently returned to Ellerslie. Brahman is steadily improving in condition, though he is likely to require a few races before he is seen at his best. Last season Brahman earned over £850, one of his best performances being his second to Globe Trotter in the Islington Handicap at the Auckland Racing Club's , Easter meeting. He was also tried over a middle distance, but did not impress. That speedy colt Transmitter is coming ' on fast and has been sprinting well during the week. He has developed into a . fine-looking three-year-old and, being a , very gross customer, he has to be given plenty of work to keep him right. Transmitter will contest the Avondale Guineas, but it is doubtful if he will he capable of running out a mile so early in the season, especially if the ground is heavy on the day. Although not required to do any severe tasks, the hunter King Dazzle is bowling along very freely in his work. On Thursday morning he was given a run alone ; over three furlongs and shaped very i creditably. When trained at Ellerslie as a t\vo-j"ear-old King Dazzle revealed j abundance of speed, but he has done little i racing. He is a big. raking gelding by I King Lu from Miss Dazzle, a consistent performer in jumping races some years ago. ★ Work on Heavy Track At Takanini Track conditions were at their heaviest at Takanini this morning, slow times being registered and, generally speaking, I the work was mostly of a serviceable order. The Avondale Cup candidate, Te ■ Kawiti (Coleman) gained friends by t:-.e impressive style in which he worked over a round, completing the last mile ii 1.53. Lovaals (McMinn) had iittle in reserve at the end of seven furlongs in 1.40, the "last five furlongs taking 1.10 3-5. The Dozer (Beguely), with the assistance of I Royal Musk (Gray) over the last five furlongs, was doing his work nicely at ; the end of a mile in 1.5, the List five furlongs taking 1.11. . Gaymiss (McMinn) decisively defeated Route March (Smith) over five lurlo >gs j in 1.9, one of the best efforts ovir this ; distance being that of Foxlore (Smith), ■ who was doing it a shade better than Gay■jax (Beguely) in 1.7 2-5. Other gallops:— [ Two furlongs.—Sleepy Fox 245, TToney- ; wood 275, Air Port 25 3-ss, Miss Diirn'ty ; I 25 2-ss. J i Three furlongs.—Representative and] • Pomade 435. J The chief event is the Goldfields Cup, - ■ which carries a stake of £250 and a trophy . donated by Mr. H. E. Salter. The disj tance is two miles, and the class 4.42. ! The fast sprint is the Puru Handicap of ' £170, one mile and a quarter, with a I 2.53 limit.
