TWENTY-FOUR IN

THE CARDINAL HARD

TE KAWITI HAS GOOD CHANCE

With mi acceptance of 24 horses for the Avondale Cup to be decided on Saturday next, there is ample material for a fine contest, and with so many proved gallopers in the race the finding of the likely win nor is no easy task.

At first glance The Cardinal, 8.6, makes a strong appeal. He has shown himself capable of running out a solid 10 furlongs and is undoubtedly a good stayer. Again, he is partial to a soft track, and should he get it this way next week he will be a vny hard horse to dispose of: in fact, it is not easy to select one at this stage to beat him. Amigo, the topweight, 0.0. is good performer, but it is doubtful whether he could sive The Cardinal 81l>. and Radiant Vaals, whose efforts this season and in June last have been most consistent, is not going to find it easy with 8.13. At the same time lie is a good galloper, one who can be depended unon to take up a good position early, and if beaten it will be by the distance.

\oung Paddon, 8.12, is a fine galloper on a soft track. It is doubtful if he were ever better than at present, but thoush he races well lie has fallen just that little bit short of which would carry him to a win. Rakanui, *3.9. must be respected, mid both Clipper. 8.9, and Noble Fox, 8.7. can go a good mile and a quarter.

.T urther down Te K.iwiti appeals with 8.4. Tii finishing second in the Admiralty Handicap at (he P.ikuranga Hunt meeting, he snowed that his condition is right, and as he can stay at least a middle distance well he is bound to have many friends. Clinch won the Cup last year and is a possibility again with 8.2, whilp Lovaals, 8.0, has been racing well, and should the track be on the soft side wiil lie one of the favoured selections. Nothing in the list lower down is likely to appeal at this stage, but the work on the tracks next week may bring about some changes in the position.

Just now it would appear that The Cardinal and To Kawiti have best prospects The acceptances are: —
