GILDED COINS

PROSECUTION FOLLOWS SALE

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, this day. The scarcity and high value of gold tempted two business people in Dunedin to purchase from a man, who stated that he was off a ship, coins which the police allege were represented as being worth £10, which looked like gold and even responded to the gold test, but which were discovered to be silver coins gilded over.

In the Police Court to-day. Clarence Watson (35) was charged with obtaining £6 from Chin Tong Non and £3 from Jamesina Catherine Fraser by a false pretence. lie pleaded not guilty. The police stated accused purchased four English crown pieces from the Robinson Finance Company's shop, telling the assistant his son was a coin collector. Later he took two coins to Mollers. working jewellers, and had them gilded. The same day, the police alleged, he called at Mrs. Fraser's shop and offered a coin for sale. A test showed gold and she paid him £3. Later he called at a Chinese laundry and. stating the coin was worth £10, sold it for £3. Returning to this shop later he wanted to borrow £8, but the police in the meantime had been informed. (Proceeding.)
