REGISTER FOR MILK
BRITISH SUPPLY SCHEME
Rec. 9.30 a.m. RUGBY, Aug. 29. The direction to all persons to i egister for milk is not a preliminarv measure before the imposition of rationing. This was made clear by the Minister of Food. Lord Woolton. who said the step was purely a precautionary one.
Although it was not possible to estimate accurately the quantitv of milk available during the winter. I-Orel \\ oolton said, it was expected that some 70.000.000 to 50.000.000 gallons a month would be available at the worst period of the winter. This figure was equal to the average monthly consumption for the last pre-w: r year. Milk drinking was on the increase and last December the consumption rose to 75.000.000 gallons.
Supplies of condensed and dried milk were being accumulated and ii was expected that enough of these would be available to provide 25.000.000 gallons a month, bringing the available total of the liquid milk supply to 100,000,000 gallons a month—an amount considerably in excess of the greatest consumption of milk ever known in Britain. However. registration was necessary to ensure that priority was given to infants, invalids and adolescent s. and that distribution would be cflective.
