PAPER MONEY GETS FLYING START
HARDY Paper Money, who died at Lake Wanaka last year, has been given a flying start on the winning sires' list this season, Treasurer (two), Jolly Time (two) and Boloyna being his winning representatives.
Paper Money was the most successful sire represented at the Grand National meeting, Treasurer (Winter Cup) and Boloyna (Islington Handicap) taking the principal flat races, while Jolly Time won the Avonhead Handicap. Paper Money raced in the colours of Sir W. Gilbey and in the Derby of 1919 was third to Grand Parade and Buchan. The distance was a shade too far for him, but gameness is a characteristic he has passed on to his stock.
A notable example of sons of Paper Money showing form over a distance that looked too far for them' was provided in the New Zealand Cup of 1937, when Wild Chase and Silver Streak followed the winner, Cerne Abbas, home. Mr. J. B. Reid imported Paper Money to the Elderslie Stud in 1921. Paper Money made a name for himself early as a sire of sprinters, though later he sired a number of versatile horses capable of showing form over all distances.
Circulation, Overdrawn, Money Order, Scrip, Pink Note, Paperchase, Countersign, The Wensum, Endorse, Silver Paper, Gold Tinge, Autopay, Inflation, Silver Streak, Wild Chase and Paper Slipper are some of the horses sired by Paper Money. For many years Paper Money has held a consistently high place on the list of winning sires and in 1929 was on top, his stock winning £22,067. Altogether, his stock has won over £180,000 in the Dominion.
