PRAYERS IN SCHOOL
FOR VICTORY IN WAR SUGGESTION' IX PARLIAMENT (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. New Zealand was spending nearly £5,000,000 annually on secular education but neglecting moral education, declared Mr. Doidge (National Tauranga) in the House of Representatives yesterday. He asked the Minister if the Government did not think the time was ripe to deal with the policy now in operation of secular education children saluting the flag every morning, and he considered they should also offer pravers for victory. Surely it would be possible for the heads of the great churches to hammer out something which would provide something in common which would be acceptable? Mr. Frost (Government, New Plymouth): There are prayers at secondary schools every morning. Mr. Doidge pointed out that local bodies often opened meetings with prayers and the House of Representatives always commenced with a prayer. A Government member: And we are no better for it!
