Veiled Appeasement Offer Seen

The Japanese Domei news agencv quotes authoritative quarters as saying that the British-American declaration, firstly, pledges Britain not to make a unilateral peace with Germany; secondly, underwrites the alleged British and American aims for Anglo-Saxon world domination: thirdly, demonstrates the British and American failure to grasp the real causes underlying the European war. The Domei agency adds that joint military action against Japan was one of the basic topics discussed bv President Roosevelt and MiChurchill. The Singapore newspaper Straits Times, criticising the British and American declaration, said: "We had hoped for uncompromising reference to Japan and for a definite 'hands off' warning. Instead we have what appears to be one more veiled offer of appeasement in the Far East, and that certainly will not curb the hotheads at Tokyo." Madrid newspapers give prominence to the Atlantic meeting.
