LEASED AREAS

ABANDONED HOMESTEADS SUGGESTION FOR VSE (B5- Telceraph.—Parliamentary Reporter ) WELLINGTON", this day. While regrouping of leasehold areas bv the Lands Department was iustified in many cases, it was contended bv Mr. Burnett (National. Temuka) "when discussing the Lands Department estimates in the House of Representatives yesterday that this process had been overdone and had produced the tragedy of abandoned homesteads. They were unoccupied, and the State was put to expense either of removal or of providing some oversight of the buildings. He suggested that these farms should be reconditioned and made suitable for occupation even though only a peppercorn rent could be charged, as the maintenance of production was so important.

In one district alone there were 18 homesteads which had been abandoned through this regrouping process. No matter how much was exnected from secondary industries, concluded Mr. Burnett, the main source of the country's progress for many years to come would be from land settlement.

The acting-Minister of Lands, Mr. Barclay, did not comment on Mr. Burnett's suggestion.
