J. Whitten Strikes Form In Open Race — V. Mold's Impressive Display

Last week's open rare of 40 miles. from Point Chevalier to Kumcu and back, conducted by the Auckland l Club in conjunction with the .Metropolitan Club, was the most successful held this season. A particularly I good prize list attracted the riders. I there being 27 starters. Much credit j is due to the handicapping for an | excellent race, as only 50 seconds j separated the first rider to finish and the scratch men. W. Hills was alone on the limit <20.0> with a strong bunch of five on scratch, comprising J. Wade. Is Fish, K. Knight. Litchfield and 1). Hills. The first men to turn at Kumcu were Hills. Kusscll. HedUmd. Manson <ir,.o). closely followed by a big bunch off the 11, 9 and 7« minute marks. Then a minute later came the 6i minute men, Trencary. Gavin. Mold and Viscovich, who were riding a great race, followed by .1. Whitten. J. Bicknell. M. Knight and Watson, all off 4 minutes. On the return journey the field bunched making a solid team which then did not look like being caught, but the 4 minute men. who were working like trojans. just got up in the last mile. It was from this bunch came the winner. Whitten emerged to ward off the promising junior V. Mold T>.o> after a preat tussle. K. Edkins '11.0) was third, and J. King (9.0> fourth. Twelve figured in the sprint, with the winner's time lh 52m 345. The scratch men had a ding-dong battle for time honours. Fish leading the sprint from Knight, but Wade, in a characteristic burst, just got up to win by half a length, , in lh 49m 255. Whitten (Auckland) rode his best ! race of the season. He has not been showing anything like last year's ■ form which won him the 50 miles championship, but now he has struck his true form he will be hard to head off in future events. The fact that he only got up to the leaders in the ' last mile proves that he was handicapped on his merits. He fully deserved his win. as he was a tireless worker right throughout. j V. Mold (Metropolitan) is certainly ' the most promising junior in Auckland for years. Slight of build he is a good road rider with a finishing i burst of speed. He demonstrated this by downing many more expert- ' enced riders, and his display Was most impressive. He has now had two wins and a second in his last , four starts. i K. Edkins fAuckland) surprised • by finishing third, for he has been off his machine quite a- lot this winter'and is nowhere near his best as .' yet. His placing should give him i some encouragement in regaining j

his old form. J.
