YOUNG MEN CHARGED

SEQUEL TO DANCE BRAWL

PUKEKOHE, Friday.

As the sequel to a brawl at the Mauku Victory Hall on June 14, six young men were charged before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., with behaving in a disorderly manner while a dance was in progress. The defendants, Thomas George Bell and John Roeland Bell, farm hands (Aka Aka), Alan Francis Yeo, factory hand (Waiuku), David Jakeman and William Jakeman, truck drivers (Mauku), and Frank Jakeman, quarryman (Waiuku), all pleaded not guilty. The magistrate said it was often difficult in such cases to distinguish between the real participants and those who endeavoured to end the brawl. He suggested if there were fights in future at dance halls that outsiders refrain from interfering, because interference might prove expensive.

The charge against J. R. Bell was dismissed. T. G. Bell was fined £1, A. F. Yeo £1, D. Jakeman £4, F. Jakeman £2 10/, and W. Jakeman £2 10/. Costs ranged from £1 6/3 to £1 19/3.
