DAY OF SURPRISES

The Dozer, Grand National Winner,

Cost Three Half-Crowns

(PA > CHRISTCHURCH, this day , The Dozer, secured by Mr. J. Drozdowski from a Taranaki friend for 7/6, ran the Grand National Hurdles field practically to a standstill at Riccarton yesterday. Tidewaiter, the only horse likely to trouble him, bashed the hurdle at the five furlongs post and from that point A. E. Ellis was master of the situation with H. E. Gray's Takanini candidate.

The winner had the field struggling from barrier-rise, and at one stage had a break of a dozen lengths from his nearest opponent. The only mistake he made was when he hooked the stand hurdle, but he recovered cleverly. Ellis was able to give him a breather racing along the back, and it was then that Tidewaiter closed on him, only to ruin his chance by blundering through the hurdle at the five furlongs. Tidewaiter afterwards battled on, but The Dozer held him safe to win by four lengths.

Pekoe finished third half a furlong behind. He put in a bad jump at the first hurdle and then held a prominent position for a round, though he had a life at the hurdle near the distance. He did not stay on, the solid pace finding him wanting a long way from home. Esperance Bay, fourth, was soon well out of his ground, and never looked like improving, while King Rey, fifth, was with The Dozer for a time, and then trailed him, though he could not see the distance out. Master Dingle, Erination and Aussie Ra were never prominent.

An Easy Win First Round, the winner of the Woolston Handicap, is a four-year-old mare by Nightly from Knock Out, a sister to Rival Hit and half-sister to Winning Rival. First Round was soon close to the leaders, and she galloped freely in the run home to win easily. Auburn Lad also finished on, but was no match for the winner. Eulogist put up a solid effort under a big weight for third, but Blue Coat and Hurry Girl both weakened. Star Wink showed speed, but also faded. Greenband and Johnemby were running out, but Renarde failed to get into the picture. Colibrl Scores Colibri was the fifth successive winner trained in the North Island, and he made short work of the Trial Hurdles field, taking over the pacemaking early and holding on to win without being seriously challenged. Colibri did not show much form last season, and he has not been long in Mrs. A. W. McDonald's Awapuni stable. Cuisinier, harder riddeu from the straight entrance, would have finished closer up, but he" just managed to catch Merry Simon on the post for second. Cuisinier was not jumping well. Fundy Bay tired in the going to a poor fourth, while Cartoonist showed speed early, only to drop out just as quickly. Roddy dropped Ins rider at Cutts' and ruined the chance of Nightdress. Half and Half was soon well back and did not improve. Four Lengths Margin Boloyna, runner-up in the Winter Cup, had little difficulty in running out a middle distance in the Islington Handicap, and he coasted in four lengths clear after reaching the front near the distance. Wardress worked her way forward racing along the back, and followed Gay Parade to the straight, but once more she had to be content with second place, being unable to hold the winner off. Master Cyklon was always handy, and he battled on to beat Gay Parade, who was responsible for the pacemaking, by a head. Cherokee was only a neck back after she had been prominent over the last six furlongs. Prudent Prince will be improved by the run, but Young Charles was not good enough. Little Robin, eighth, was last at straight entrance.

Another Surprise Noble Fox, who had finished ninth in the Winter Cup, brought a day of surprises to a close by putting in a fastfinishing run which enabled him to defeat the favourite, Augment, by a neck in the August Handicap. Noble Fox was within striking distance throughout and galloped particularly freely in the run home. Augment ran into second place behind Black Majesty at the end of three furlongs and, after challenging and getting the better of his rival in the concluding stages, he could not hold off Noble Fox. Black Majesty battled on solidly. Rebel Mate, a good horse in heavy going, came through for fourth, with Saxon Tor, Sham Boy and Sceptre following.

Track Very Heavy The track was very heavy, but North Island horses handled the going well, winning sis races. Rain fell during a good part of the day. The totalisator handled £44,430, compared with £45,642 10/ last year, a decrease of £1212 10/. For two days the total was £124,556, against £121,080, an increase of £3476.
