FOR N.Z. TRADE

TRANSFER OF SHIPS

FREIGHTERS AND TANKERS

Three freighters and two tankers are being transferred to the New Zealand trade, according to Press Association messages received during the week-end from Washington and Sydney. The size of the ships is not mentioned.

The message from Washington slates that the United States Maritime Commission had authorised the charter of three requisitioned Danish freighters to the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, replacing British tonnage diverted elsewhere.

The Sydney report states that the Australian Minister of Supply, Senator McLeav, said he had received news from America that the Califor-nian-Texas Company had arranged for two of Its tankers to be diverted to the New Zealand-Australian run.

Commenting on the report last night the acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. W. Nash, said the Danish vessels would replace three Union Company's ships transferred to other runs. Referring to the diversion of the tankers, Mr. Nash said any extra facilities to provide further petrol supplies for the Dominion and Australia, which would not endanger the major war effort, would be more than welcome.
