BURMA ROAD
Bomb damage on the 400-mile Burma Road, back door to China, is being repaired by women and children, according to an overseas correspondent. Because of the great demand for labour in laying new railways and highways, most of the maintenance work is being done by women. It is a common sight to see mothers nursing their infants at the roadside between shifts. The importance of the women's task is obvious when it is known that about 16,000 tons of supplies monthly cross the Burma Road into China, part being stored on the way.
