Bed during the acute stage is essential. Soothing lotion, such as a mixture of glycerine and belladonna, helps to lase the pain, and a dose of ten grains of aspn in for an adult dose brings relief. During the four and five days when the trouble is at its worst a milk and soft food diet is advised also regular use of an antiseptic mouth wash. The patient should be kept out of draughts, as complications can be dangerous. The patient should avoid contact with other people for at least a week after the glands have become normal.
