AMERICAN WARSHIPS
LETTER FROM COMMANDER
Gratitude for the reception given; to the personnel of the United States naval squadron, which visited Auckland in March last, is expressed in a letter to Sir Ernest Davis from Captain Ellis S. Stone, the commander of the flagship, the cruiser Brooklyn. Captain Stone acknowledged two gifts from Sir Ernest, a large photograph of Auckland and the Waitemata harbour, and an engrossed copyl of the speech of welcome given in Auckland. He added, that since leaving Auckland, the squadron travelled fast and far, and had for I some time been operating in the I Atlantic. "I am very happy again to have the opportunity to express to you.j land through you to the people of ! Auckland, the thanks of the personnel of the squadron and of myself for jthe truly royal reception given to us " writes Captain Stone. "I know that they join with me in the prayer that victory and peace may soon come to the great Empire with the past, the present and the future of which our country is so closely linked."
