The honour of saddling up the winner of the first race of the season in the North Islana went to the Paeroa trainer J. 11. Spinks, when he won the Maramarua Hack and Hunters Steeplecnase with the littlefancied Conflagration, who scored a somewhat comfortable .victory over the short-priced win favourite Rival. Belsander led over the first circuit from Full o' Scotch, but with just on a round to go, Conflagration joined Jtelsander in the lead, the pair being about five lengths in front of Full o' Scotch, with Rival and Rod-Mhor next. Conflagration drew out to a clear lead going along the back and Rival moved up second, the pair being a long way in front of the others when there were still two fences to jump. Conflagration had about half a dozen lengths' lead on Rival as they turned for home, and his advantage was never threatentd, the leader going on to win easily by six lengths. General Ruse, who was well back for most of the way pushed into third place in the last 50 yards, just beating Comrie. pe others were never really in the i D' ai finished a long way back although all got round with mistakes. Top Weight Scores The favourite, Verulam, had every show in the first division of the Stewards' Hack. Despite his easy I victory earlier in the day he was not in great demand in the Thames Steeplechase, but he again won very easily and had the race at his mercy a long way from home. The favourite, Allegretto, went away very fast and at one stage had a break of 100 yards on the field, but with six . furlongs to go he was a tired horse and began to drift back to the field. I Floodlight had taken charge just after entering upon the last round from Kinkle, with Fat Boy. Clansman and Conflagration following. Conflagration made a sharp dash : along the back which took him up i to Floodlight, and a little further on t Conflagration drew out and from then onwards the issue was never in doubt. _ Clansman, in the straight, cut Floodlight out of second place and Kinkle, who finished foxirth. after having every chance, was the (only one to be ridden out outside ; the placed horses, the others all i being pulled up after jumping the last hurdle. Jewelled Girdle ran down his fences very badly and eventually fell, his fall being the only one in the three jumping races during the day. Baldric balked at the last fence but was hopelessly out of the contest at the time. Win at Second Start. \ When Exnellant scored an easy win in the Parawai Handicap, the ■' horse and rider met with a mixed j reception on returning to the birdcage. a small section of the rowd indulged in booing and cries of "Put him out." Earlier in the afternoon Exnellant had finished in great style ito be a close fourth in the second ' division of the Stewards' Hack ; Handicap. In the race he won he ! was about the middle of the field for I the first three furlongs, and then | I put in a smart run which landed i 1 him in front and well clear of his opponents at the straight From that point he gave the others : j no chance, to win in fine style by a j i length and a half from Town Section | i who was in the lead at half-way, but : then dropped back a little to come ! on again at the finish, and to have a good tussle with Sure Pay for second money. Sure Pay did not iump away well, and had to cover a lot of ground on the outside of the j field to improve his position, but he I was, all in a furlong from the post, I and iust battled on. Queen City was ■ always prominent and finished fourth, just ahead of Lord Waitangi. ! J. Williamson, who rode Expellant, I had his third winning ride of the day. Little Rose Blooms Although the favourite Hinkler and Regal Fox both ran good races jin the Ngatea Hack, both were decisively beaten by the third I choice Little Rose, who was fifth into the straight and came along at ; the end to win with a good deal in ! hand. Elise made most of the running, and led into the straight from Glen Connell. with Regal Fox next. 1 Then Little Rose put in her claim and had no difficulty in going on to win by a length and a quarter from Hinkler, who finished well and beat Regal Fox by half a length. Stratford was fourth and Acrobat next. Results:—• MARAMARUA HACK ANO HUNTERS' STEEPLE- | CHASE of i-130. About two miles ana a quarter.
