Algerian's Prospects In Winter Cup
(0.C.) WANGANUI, Friday. W. H. Dwyer left Wanganui yesterday with Algerian and Pekoe, both of whom are to race at Riccarton on Tuesday. Algerian put up a very satisfactory gallop on Tuesday and all his rceent track work has beon of a high order. With 8.2 on his back, the Beau Pere trebling must be very hard to heat in the Winter Cup, but his prospects would have looked even brighter had he been able to have a ra.ee at Trentiham. As it is, Algerian should get some money on the trip, if not in the Cup on one of the later days. Pekoe hit out well on Tuesday, and if hie "dicky" leg stands to him he is likely to give a good account of himself in the Jumpers' Flat on the first day. He has not done any schooling since he raced at Awapuni in June, but he is a natural jumper, and if he lines up fit and well in the National Hurdles he may take a hand in the finish. Amino has been off the scene since his race at Marton, but should feel the 'benefit of a couple of weeks' let up. His owner-trainer, llr. J. G. Paul, intends putting him into work again immediately with a view to the Wanganui meeting. First Girl has been spelled since racing at Marton. and her owner-trainer, Mr. J. Boyd, intends to keep the Pombal filly for the Christmas meetings. If s.he comes solid First Girl will pay her way, as she showed plenty of pace in her race at Marton. Rehearsal pulled up all right in the R ddiford Handicap at Marton, ibut the next day he was lame. There was no swelling or heat in the leg. .but it was decided not to persevere with the son of Limond—Miss Thespian. With Rehearsal out of action, W. Ravner now has only three horses in work —Dynasty, Curtail and Kingcraft. All three are training on nicely, and as they were kept in steady work all through the winter they should be in good sha.pe for the Wanganui meeting next month. All Bunsby has done well since his race at Marton and is looking more solid than ever. Keith Cliote has gone South to ride Darag, Master Cyklon and Sanction in their engagements at Riccarton. Darag created a very favourable impression when he won at Marton, and the Bulandohar gelding is not without prospects in the Cashmere Plate. Mr. W. R. S. Brewer, part-owner of Lord Cavendish, has been elected president ot the Waver'cy Racine Club. Mr. Brewer is one of the best-known and most popular sportsmen on the coast and one of the most enthusiastic and generous supporters of hunting.
