VICTORIA'S BUDGET SURPRISE MELBOURNE. Aug. 1. The main feature of the Victorian Budget presented in Parliament this week is a cut of 35 per cent in the unemployment relief tax, resulting in a saving of £575.000 to the taxpayers. Under the new rate the tax is expected to produce £1,060,000 for unemployment relief. Increases totalling £250,000 are provided for State employees to meet the increased lost of living, and increases are also made in widows' allowances. The surplus for the year is £142,000, compared with an estimate of £3000. The railways deficit is £159.000, compared with £483,000 in 1940. Railways' revenue increased by £665,000. but expenditure also greatly increased. The estimated deficit on the railways for 1941-42 is £10,000.
