FAILED TO ENROL

IN FIRST DIVISION FOUR MEN PROSECUTED Four men who appeared on summons in the Police Court to-day, charged with failing to enrol in trie first division of the reserve within the stipulated time, were fined by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. '"I don't desire to comment at all," said Percy W. Browne, who refused to plead or state whether he wished to be tried summarily or by the Supreme Court. Mr. Hunt: You are not before the Armed Forces Appeal Board, where you can talk as you like. You are in the Police Court now." A constable who interviewed Browne said defendant declined to make any explanation as to why he had not enrolled. Remarking that Browne should have carried out his duty as an ordinary citizen, Mr. Hunt fined him £10. Browne: 1 haven't the ability to pay that. Mr. Hunt: Very well, then, you'll just have to take it out. In the case of Nicolas Duzevich, who admitted that he did not enrol, his counsel said defendant met with an accident some time ago and asked his brother to enrol for him, but he did not do so. Duzevich was now enrolled. He was fined £5 and costs. "This young man gave as his excuse that he forgot to enrol," said Senior Sergeant Joyce about Lawrence P. Thew, who pleaded guilty. Thew, who had since enrolled, was fined £7 10/. Next to appear was Clarence L. Wright, who was also charged with a breach of the Change of Name Regulations. Senior Sergeant Joyce said Wright had been employed in the Hamilton district until March. "He says he had incurred some debts and that he changed his name in order to avoid his creditors," added Mr. Joyce. "However, he is now enrolled."

Fined £10 for failing to enrol in time, Wright was convicted and discharged on the second charge.
