FIRES DELIBERATELY LIT?

HAY STORES DESTROYED (0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday.

Circumstances surrounding the destruction by fire of three hay stores on properties in Kaiapoi on one night last week indicate that the fires were lit deliberately, and inquiries are being made by the police. Two of the sheds contained baled hay, and the total loss is estimated to be fairly heavy. On receiving the first alarm the fire brigade engineer went to start the engine and found the ignition key turned on and the battery flat. On investigating, he found that the i positive terminal of the battery was screwed out and all the caps were I lying unscrewed on top of the case. The delay resulted in a total loss of the sheds and their contents.

The first outbreak occurred a little after 7 p.m., this fire destroying an empty shed valued at about £100. About 9.30 p.m. fires broke out almost simultaneously in hay sheds on two other properties The loss in one case was 200 bales and in the other 100 bales.
