The chief race last Saturday was the ! Manukau Club's first annual race for the j Ellis Cup. The course was from Point , Chevalier to Kumeu, via Swanton Tunnel back v ' a Whenuapai, 40 miles. C. W. made fastest time, a race record. Of the 37 startens 22 finished inside the time limit, a fine all-round elfort considering the severity of the route. On the seven miles of metal from Swanson hill to Kumeu V. A. Wills, J. Stjnex, N. j J. Grant, A. W. Stonex, E. G. Mynott, B. Dye and B. G. Whitley punctured, while D. Stewart and B. i). Herrick had falls. The big test of the race was the short, steep climb over Swanson Tunnel hill, which R. Jensen (off 23 0) *utmounted first Several walked the steepest section, but Whitley was swift in his ascent, only to puncture later and run out of the road into a culvert. V. Hills was another who climbed well. Next to thescratch men, Lloyd. K. T. Saumters and W. Timmins were the fastest, taking 35.35 for the 12 miles. Shilton. Johnson, Aulick and Stonex topped the hill in 34.0 from starting time, but Harvey fscr) started to lag behind six miles out. Young Competitors Excel The hill appeared to have sapped the energy j of many, for the scratch riders .nade up considerable ground and at 33 miles were only 2.50 1 behind the leaders, G. A. Hawkes (winner), R. ! C. Lea land and 8. H. Bishop, with Bartley. Walsh, Ryder. Saunders and Timmins sandwiched | between the two groups. Within a mile of the i finish Hawkes. 20-year-old recruit of last month. I cleared out and won by 17s from a bunch of six. in which were the three scratch riders. R. C. Lealand. a muscular Junior, put in a surprising finish to head off Shilton. Saunders, Johnson, Aulick fend Qartlejr In that order. Shilton was fastest afte»* pacing out a splendid race with Johnson and Hullck, and his time of , Ih 54m 30s may remain a course record for many seasons, for ideal weather prevailed. Shilton has rapidly adapted himself to the hfliy courses around Auckland since his arrival from Canterbury He la strong on the hills and rapid on the flats, and wins the sprints by sheer power and a high gear. Riding fairly heavy 26-inch wheels Johnson re- i veiled more of his old dash, while Aulick performed creditably, for he was a Junior last season. Inter-Club Honours Even The Northern Cluo invited members of the Lynndale Club to a return inter-club event, and honours were evenly divided. There were seven— 1 Cunningham. Dyer. Harland. of Northern: and Baldwin, Herk, Hill and Waring, of Lynndale—on i scratch. Perfect teaming enabled Cunningham, first over the line after the Initial lap. to equal ) M. T. Gamble's 1936 lap record of 6.18. In the i fourth round Cunningham had mechanical trouble, i Baldwin eventually gained fastest time, but 40* i seconds slower than D. O"Gorman's cotirse record , of 1935). R Tanfield. younger of the two racing brothers, won after a flat-out struggle against 1 A. Wallace and J. Fletcher. Outstanding Performers Tanfleld rode as a Junior last season, when he i won a 16-mlle event of! 4.0. and has *hown such marked improvement vnat ne can now line up • with hi? elder brother. His defeat of such a renowned sprinter as Wallace, who won th* Junior half-mile title in 1938 and the unpaced kilometre this year. Indicates txrr rapid strides this young rider has made. Steady riding from the limit marks has assisted J. Hetcher to «raln the stamina demanded by distance races over undulating courses, and he was the first of the Lynndale riders to finish. The Papatoetoe Cycle Club held a combined race to Drury and back, a distance of 22 miles, for the Mitchell Cup. Results: A. Docherty (9.30). 66.54, 1; D. Bernns (9.30). 66.57. 2: A.
