OBITUARY

MRS. T. WHITWEI.I, fO.C.) HAMILTON, Wednesday. The funeral took place yesterday of- Mrs. Elizabeth Whitwell of Tapapa, Tirau. aged S3. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. T Hosking, Mrs. Whitwell was bow. in Cornwall, and after spending a few years in the United States came to New Zealand in 1573. In about IS9O Mrs. Whitwell went with her husband. Mr. Thomas Whitwci! whom she married in 18So, to live at Tcpapa. Mr. and Mrs. Whitweil celebrated their golden wedding in 1935. She is survived by her husband and a family of three. Chapman, general treasurer of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, died this morning after a brief illness. He was 51 vears of age. Mr. Chapman joined the Presbyterian Chinch office -FtafT in 1912. He served with the forces overseas in the Great War. being wounded. On his return to New Zealand he resumed duly with the Church, ile was appointed assistant treasurer in 1920 and general treasurer in 1925. MB. (i. A. MARTIN The death has occurred of Mr George Alfred Martin, aged 83. Mr Martin, who was educated at the Church of England Grammar School Parnell. began to study surveying at the age of IS. He was for many I years a Government surveyor and I carried out surveys in many parts ot the North Island before retiring about 13 years ago. His wife. onV : son and three daughters survive him.

Hbi , grandfather, with his wife and family, arrived at Onehunga in the shin Brilliant in the early 'forties and her father. Mr. George .1. Lawlor was born at Onehunga. Ho married Miss A. (J rey. a niece of Sir (Joorgc Grey, and settled at Thames, where he was battery manager for a big mining company in the gold-rush days. later he was stationed ;n Waihi as representative of the -\ M P Society. Miss Lawlor was a member for many years of the staff of Chandler and Co.. and also contributed verse and sketches to many \ew Zealand and Australian publications under the penname of Ruthyn. She wrote 'fink May" and "A Book of Verse " She lived in recent years at Tapu Coromandcl Coast. Miss Lawlor leaves a sister, Mrs. N\ B. Lusk of It Kniti.

MK. \. K. UPTON 'CO WHANGAREI. this day. The funeral took place at Maunr cemetery this afternoon of Mr Albert Edward Upton, aged 79 in his day one of the best known engineers in the Dominion. The son of Nelson pioneers, he was educated at Nelson College. Joining the engineering staff of the Public Works Department he was engaged for a time or. railway construction and surveving work. He was assistant-engineer to the Westport Haj-bour Board when he accepted a post with the Brazil State Railways. While in South America he married. Returning to New Zealand in 1900 he became engineer to the Timaru Harbour Board, helping to execute the scheme which converted Timaru from an open roadstead to a harbour. Leaving this position he became a consulting engineer and architect at: Blenheim. He later came north about 1919. acquiring a home in Deveron Road, Whangarei. He lived also at Takapuna and Mangawai, but retired to Whangarei about five years ago. He was keenlv interested in rifle shooting and gardening. Mis. Upton survives her husband.
