YOUNG PADDON

WAIPA WIN j

WOODSTOCK STAKES WILDORE SECOND HARD DAY FOR BACKERS In beautiful weather the Wai|>a I lacing Club held its winter meeting! at Te Awamutu to-day. The track ' was in excellent order, and there was a large attendance. Kival Kur|>ri.s<\« i Rival brought off u surprise in the Andrew Kay Memorial Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase. Several falls during the running no doubt contri- : buted to his success, but lie jumped j well all the way, and, taking the lead about a quarter of a mile from home, he won easily bv six lengths and returned a dividend of over a third of a century. Sweet Nothing; and Mio Generale fell at the first : fence, and Paint then went out with a good lead, only to run off at the second fence. When the field came round again Brandon Hall was leading Rod Mlior and General Riske. with Rival haif a dozen lengths further back. Gay Bonnet fell at the j double, and Strathearn ran off. Bel- 1 laghy then went to the front, and he was running along nicely a length clear of Brandon Hall and Rival, with Centaurus falling further back. | The leader, Bellaghy, then lost his rider, and Rival led into the straight; half a dozen lengths clear of Brandon Hall. He won easily by this j margin, Comrie finishing on strongly ; in the straight to cut British Sovereign out of third place. Conflagration was next, and Red Appellant several lengths further back. Favourite Unplaced Lady Bambury was made a solid i each-way favourite for the first divi-1 sion of the Arapuni Hack, but her . supporters got a very poor run for I their money. She was very slow \ to leave the mark, and never after-; wards' showed up. Royal Sister, j once she hit the lront, attempted to ' lead all the way, and when she I turned for home two lengths clear she appeared likely to succeed. However, she stopped badly in the last half-furlong, and just struggled into third place. The winner turned up in Glenbevan, who was expected to win on the conaluding day at Auckland, but failed to race up to expectations. He was in the middle of the field when they settled down, Royal Sister, Miss Eureka, African, Elise j and Royal Pilot making the running | in that order. It was not until the runners were half-way down the straight that Glenbevan came through, and he went on to win. going away by a length and a half j from Elise, who finished on well. The fourth horse was Air Port, and then came African and Miss Eureka, j Many Mishaps I The W. G. Park Steeplechase was just one mishap after another and to > the mortification of backers not one of the first four fancies completed j the course. First of all Allegretto : came down at the second fence when in the lead and immediately afterwards Tudor broke down and was pulled up. The next to disappear was Clansman, who was pulled up at the end of five furlongs, at which stage Black Musk was bowling along a dozen lengths clear of Gar Vaals, who tipped on landing and was shortly afterwards pulled up. Black Musk was still several lengths in front when he came to the second fence at the double where Allegretto had gone, and he failed to clear this, crashing heavily. Floodlight was then left in front three lengths clear of Kinkle, with Simint next. The last-named did not go far after that for he, too, was pulled up. Kinkle had the measure of Floodlight crossing the top and he led into the straight to go on and win easily by four lengths from Floodlight, who was 20 lengths clear of Lucidus. Erination was the only other horse to complete the course, Jewelled Girdle having balked at the last fence.

Wide of the Mark Continuing on the wrong leg, investors were again wide of the mark in the second division of the Arapuni Hack. Joy Vaals, the winner, was only sixth in the order of 1 betting. The Vaals mare left the barrier smartly and led all the way, winning all out by half a length from Nan Vaals, who finished strongly from seventh position at the home turn. Royal Melody, Stylishman, The Pacifist, Bronze Emerald and Ebony Star were in that order behind Joy Vaals over the first five furlongs, and there was not much between them. Joy Vaals was still running on strongly at the half distance where Nan Vaals came through smartly on the rails, but she was unable to make up her leeway. Stylishman stayed on for third place, and then came Bronze Meter, Natal, and the favourite, Rara Avis. Results:— ANDREW KAT MEMORIAL HACK AND lIUNTEBB' STEEPLES of £200 2nd trophy v«t lup £!S.
