New Zealander's Courage Recognised TRAINED IX AUSTRALIA Rec. 10 a.m. MELBOURNE, this day. eu i enant Howard Dudley Reid, of the Royal Australian Navy Volunteer Reserve, whose award of the yeorge Medal was announced on * xT Une was born in Wellington. Zealand, and educated at Wellington College. Until the middle of last year, f? he came to Australia with his mother, Mrs. Maud Reid, he was an accountant practising in New Zealand. He enlisted in the naval reserve as a sub-lieutenant, and after a two months' course was' fully commissioned as a lieutenant, sailing Irom Melbourne in December. In New Zealand he was interested in sport and athletics, in which he was a prominent performer. The George Medal was awarded for courage and devotion to duty. The Minister for the Navy, Mr. w. M. Hughes, said the quality of the men who had gone from Australia had been very favourably commented upon by the Admiralty, and the awards announced exemplified the fine work that Australian yachtsmen were doing.
