He enlisted in the naval reserve as a sub-lieutenant, and after a two months' course was' fully commissioned as a lieutenant, sailing Irom Melbourne in December. In New Zealand he was interested in sport and athletics, in which he was a prominent performer. The George Medal was awarded for courage and devotion to duty. The Minister for the Navy, Mr. w. M. Hughes, said the quality of the men who had gone from Australia had been very favourably commented upon by the Admiralty, and the awards announced exemplified the fine work that Australian yachtsmen were doing.
