SAYERS FOUR TRIES WHEN RICHMOND OVERWHELMS MARIST

Combination by Richmond backs made I tlic team's task againet Maiist on Saturday j a comparatively easy one. Richmond h> able to field the same inside backs th;it it had last season. .Webb, Graham. Solomon and 'Jiittleton. With knowkvlgo of each other's play, the combination worked smoothly at all times, and much to the idvantagc of A. Savers on the win?, that speedy* sure-handed young player grasping every chance handed out to him and get- j tin? four trie**. Richmond was victorious by 'J7 points to 5. J Back in his old position at full-back for ' Xewton, in that team's friendly match : ng.iinet City on Saturday, was C Demp> ; soy. who has served liis club well for a j number of se.isons. His positional play , was as good as ever, and his kicking was ! neat and well directed. Hie defensive play was good and he did isome neat tackling. Playing for City against Xcwton wae L. Symons. the North Shore player. Symons started in the forwards, but later had a turn in the backs, where he showed good all-round form. Originally he was fullback For the North Shore team, but was away for several seasons playing League at Wellington. Last season he returned to Auckland and began again to play for hie old club. One of the beet full-baeke that Auckland League football has had is \V. Glover, who played second five eighth for Marist againet Richmond. Glover 9 sturdy defence stopped Richmond breaking through on many occasions, but he would probably give better service to Marist it he \va9 in his old position at full-back. Unlucky Player.—Schultz. now with Xewton Rangers, must be considered the unlucky. man in League football. He played in the curtainraiser on Saturday against City and received a broken collarbone, and this will put him out of football for the season. Twice before, Schultz, who went to England in 1934, and played for York, has received a similar injury.' while two years ago he was laid aside with a broken leg. He has aleo suffered injury from broken ribs. Schultz was a successful five-eighth with the early Mount Albert Club. Justified Promotion.— ln Burgoyne, City Rovers has a player of great promise. He played well at five-eighth on Saturday and only needs careful coaching to still further improve. Burgoyne was a third grader last season. Recruit For Rangers.— Xewton has secured the services of E. Watkins, a former Richmond halfback and Auckland representative. Watkine has had a good deal of experience, and he should certainly strengthen the back division. Too Many Halves.— A feature of the Richmond game against Marist was the splendid team work of the Webb-Graham-Solomon combination, but the inside backs were given a lot of latitude round the scrum. In playing the ball, the rigid rule of one halfback should be observed. On many occasions four Richmond playere were noticed standing inside the five yards area. This advantage often caught the Marist backs out of position, and it vac surprising that more penalties were not given against Richmond. Heml Dons Jersey Aiain.— The former international fullback, J. Hemi, played Im first game this season when he turned out to assist Manukau, against Papakura. on Saturday, in a. friendly match, which was won by the former by 35 points to 20. Hemi showed splendid form, and hip powerful, long-range kicking was a feature of the game. It is anticipated that Manukau will have Hemi's services for the rest of the season.
