AUCKLAND RELIEF
REVIEW OF OPERATIONS
In reviewing the work of the past year in Auckland of the Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee, the I chairman, Sir Ernest Davis, said at the annual meeting yesterday, that £8405 had been expended for relief purposes and sundry items, and the year had closed with a balance of £8167. There had been a comparatively light call on the committee's operations for assisting cases of social distress. Generally there had been considerable improvement in social conditions in the city, but certain districts appeared to require assistance to help necessitous cases. The report added that at the moment it was uncertain whether the generous grants received would be continued. In such event, howI ever, it was obvious that it would onlv'be done if the present fund were more or less exhausted. No doubt, the new executive committee would in due course take up the matter with the Minister of Internal Affairs if the form of relief was to continue. The, retiring committee was reelected, and Mr. James Melling was re-elected as honorary secretary.
