KATOOMBA—TORPEDO KING

Excellent weather favoured the Waikato Trotting Club for the winter meeting, held at Claudelands today. The track was in great order and the attendance large. Wiri Bingen. who nas been sparsely raced curing the last two seasons, was solidly backed to second favouritism in the Introductory Handicap in consequence <>f good track trials, when driven by Max Stewart. His supporters showed good judgment, because, after being in third place until half a mile from home. Wiri Bingen then ran to the leader. Twice Worthy, and had the race well won when the straight was entered. Twice Worthy struggled on to defeat Getaway for second place, with Kaipaki Bill finishing on a close fourth. Twice Worthy and Soldier Sam made the running for half the journey from Wiri Bingen. Golden Journey. Getaway and Kaipaki Bill. With quarter of a mile to go. the issue lay between Twice Worthy and Wiri Bingen. Ksther finished on nicely in fifth place. Max Stewart started off the day on his wrong leg. as owing to trouble with the float he did not arrive on the course until shortly before the race, and after C. G. Smith had been substituted as the driver of Wiri Bingen in his absence. Katoomba at 1,«.-t Stewarts bracket, reduced to two. Gamester and Koesian. was made a warm favourite for the Eureka Handicap, but neither horse ever threatened danger, although Koesian showed pace. The winner of the first division. Katoomba, who had run quite a number of minor placings in novice events to earn a 24yds penalty, took up a good position early in the running behind Storeman. Castella del Oro and Guide Peter, but when Castella del Oro turned for home in front he appeared to have the race won. However, driven right out by Clifton. Katoomba just got up to win by a nose. Press Gang came home well in third place, just ahead of Guide Peter. The second division resulted in another exciting finish, three horses passing the judge almost in line. Victory went to Torpedo King, who I had led crossing the top. but then j ran a bit wide at the turn and lost • three lengths. Rama Direct th.-n ! got to the front, with Sonja Henie ' challenging strongly on the rails. It I was only in the last stride that TorI pedo King got up to win by half a I head and pay over a score and a half. Sonje Henie was half a head ! further back third, with Krua Peter ! and Parrish Queen next. The last named was going well when she met with interference, and hers was a I good performance to finish fifth. longdate Surprises Commencing smartly Langdale from 48yds behind, was in front after they had gone half a mile in the Tamahere Handicap and he main tained the lead to win comfortably by three-quarters of a length. Thij American-bred horse won at Thames but subsequently disappointed hu connections at Cambridge and or the Taranaki circuit, with the result that, he was allowed to go out pav mg a good price to-dav and he re turned a double-figure dividend Ayrshire Scott once again plaved upi badly at the start, taking practicallv no part in the race, while Peler .Travis broke early and was soon I '.tailed off. Hot Point went out verv! smartly to take a six lengths lead from Katoomba and Sweet Aloes but langdale was in front passing the stand from Sweet Aloes. Mitava and Hot Point. Katoomba was up with Langdale at the home turn but ran wide, subsequentlv challenging strongly and momentarilv threatening danger. He then le'ft his feet and dropped back. Sweet Aloes and Cam Derby fought out the issue for second place, which went to Sweet Aloes by a head. Mitaya was a close fourth.
