REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK
HE FLOWER GARDEN At this time of the year there ic much to be clone if the garden is to remain tidy during the winter. The tops of herbaceous border plants ought to be cut down. Lawn edges should be trimmed with an edging iron or sharp spade. Weed killer may be applied to garden walks in mild weather, and these should be rolled often. Lawns on light land benefit by being rolled. Rose and fruit trees, ornamental trees and shrubs, spring bulbs and herbaceous border plants may be put in. Much useful pruning can be done by cutting out dead branches and those which cause overcrowding in ornamental and fruit bearing trees. Thoroughly trench vacant beds and add plenty of manure and fertilisers to the subsoil while doing the digging. Cut back Dahlias when the foliage has withered. Overhaul rockeries, removing spent plants and pruning those that need this attention. Remanure the soil. In gardens where annuals alone are used, beds can be manured, dug and left in the rough for a period before planting. A good dressing of lime on the surface will sweeten the soil. There are lots of plants which can be put in at the present time and will run quickly into flower. Pansies, Violas, Primulas, Lupins, Violets, Calendula*, Ranunculi, Anemones, Carnations, Stocks, Iceland Poppies and similar lines can be set out in well-drained soil. HE VEGETABLE GARDEN Plant out Cauliflowers and Cabbages, choosing a sunny position where drainage is good. Continue the sowing of Broad Beans and Peas. The early dwarf varieties of Peas, such as English Wonder, William Hurst, W. F. Massey and Greenfeast, should be sown now. Sow thickly on ridges. White Stone Turnips will not run to seed if sown now and will still be in time to give winter vegetables. Make sowings of such Onions as Silverskin and Brown Spanish. Hollow Crown Parsnips may be sown; also a row or two of early Shorthorn Carrots. Plant crowns of Rhubarb. Earth up Leeks and Celery. # A first planting of early Potatoes may be made in frost-free districts.
