SORTING GROUND

INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS

SELECTING A CAKEEK The exploratory function of the intermediate school was stressed by the principal of the Kowhai Intermediate School. Mr. J. F. Wells, in an address at the annual meeting of parents last evening. Such schools catered for the individual differences in children, he said.

The aim was not to concentrate on a certain type of training, irrespective of the natural bents and individual needs of the children but to reveal and develop hidden potentialities. The intermediate school was a great sorting ground in which the different aptitudes of children were discovered by special standardised tests, as well as by a tryout in various courses and activities said Mr. Wells. The pupils were then able to be given a start along various educational channels suited to their special aptitudes, whether academic, practical or social, and leading to appropriate careers and useful citizenship.
