ALLEGED THEFT
BAR-ROOM EPISODE Theft of a watch' and chain from the person in an hotel bar was the charge'on which two middle-aged men, James Billing (Mr. Aekins> and Robert Ernest Larkin (Mr. Sullivan), stood trial before Mr. Justice Fair and a jury in the Supreme Court today. The Crown Prosecutor. Mr. V. R. Meredith, said that the evidence would show that when an elderly man. John McFarlane. went to an hotel, acquaintance was claimed by Billing, who had Larkin with him. After a drink all round, and when .there was some argument after McFarlane had displayed a gold watch when asked the time, Billing was seen to lean close to the old man and to make a motion as if passing something to Larkin. Larkin left the bar, and when the barman, spoke to McFarlane the latter found that his gold watch and chain were missing. Billing was arrested then, but Larkin was not found for two days. The watch and chain were not recovered. The case is proceeding.
