FASHION NEWS FROM HOLLYWOOD

Stars' Headline Evening Wear

(By SHEILAH GRAHAM)

HOLLYWOOD, March 30. Alice Faye dances at Ciro's wearing a skin-tight bolero with her latest evening gown that looks like a neglige fugitive from her bedroom. The gown is in grey clinging chiffon with a wide band of shirring at the waist, and falls to soft flowing folds at her feet. The little bolero is embroidered in silver sequins and crystal beads. Dangling behind her partner's back Alice carries a big grey chiffon handkerchief. In her recent film Alice wears some simple daytime frocks designed by Travis Banton and distinguished by touches of lingerie. A wide, Dutch collar of white organdie looks pretty on a frock combining a moulded black taffeta bodice with full, peasant skirt of white organdie. There are also' matching wide cuffs on the elbow I sleeves. A navy blue crepe bolero dress has a white silk shirt made with tri-colour combination of scarlet, white, and navy in the collar which is open at the throat. Betty Grable goes in for these colour combinations—lime-green and white, and cocoa-brown and white. She has them in sports dresses and play clothes. One of the prettiest of the play suits has shorts and a bolero-bra of lime jersey with a kneelength, tie-on skirt of white pique. Her hat is a large lime-green straw cartwheeler faced with bands of white and pale yellow straw. To revert to the bolero—Dorothy Lamour has one of ermine to go with a white dance frock. The bolero ties at the waist with a wide white chiffon scarf. In the film Dorothy also has an evening dress of gold lame, fashioned to wrap over on the bodice, giving a high fit, moulding the long waist and with a wrap-over skirt* An afternoon dress is in black crepe with the current wrapped waistline, cross-over high neck, and straight skirt with one kickpleat in the centre front. On the left shoulder is a touch of white embroidery in linen thread. With this dress Miss Lamour wears a face-framing brimmed hat in white straw. And there is a black and white afternoon-dress with the skirt in black crepe, slim in line and with a tie-on apron in front. The bodice is white crepe, long-sleeved, highnecked, and trimmed with embroidered loops on the shoulder in black.

A couple of accessory notes. Geraldine Fitzgerald has a" miniature of "The Blue Boy" framed in gold on the lapel of her suits. Priscilla Lane wears a phosphorescent camellia perched on her black wool postillion hat. It looks smart with a black wool suit and white lace blouse.

Ida Lupino, now starring with John Garfield, takes time out to dance with husband Louis Hay ward at the Mocambo. Ida wears a diaphanous grey chiffon gown with wide peplum pockets. The latter are studded with tiny purple violets. Joan Bennett, at the Biltmore, wear* a long, white ermine coat over a pale blue organza gown. Her jewels are terrific—a wide diamond choker with two diamond loops; ear-clips in the shape of diamond feathers. And a diamond bracelet featuring two diamond roses. Jane Wyman dances with her husband at Ciro's. She wears a white crepe dinner-gown with a large gold lame scroll patterned on it. Her necklace is of gold and topaz flowers with tiny diamonds in the centre. — ;N.A.N.A. and "Auckland Star").
