FREE TRANSPORT
FOR SERVICEMEN
WOMEN'S INSTITUTE MEETING The opinion that all servicemen and servicewomen should travel free on railways, and at reduced fares on other transports was expressed in a remit submitted and carried at a meeting of the Auckland Federation of Women's Institutes held in the Lewis Eady Hall yesterday. This concluded the biannual conference, the first day taking the form of a social and exhibition of competition tables. The success of the "holidays for soldiers' children" scheme was referred to in the report of patriotic work presented by Mrs. E. R. Sawer, a vice-president. It was stated that 44 children had been given holidays in the country during the summer. Letters of appreciation and pleasure had been received both from the mothers of the children and from the people who had given of their hospitality. Another kindly gesture had been made by two institute members who had relieved on a farm in order that a mother and' ner soldier son might enjoy the latter's final leave together at Rotorua. Excellent patriotic work had been done by members, said Mrs, Sawer. In her opening address Mrs. Blackmore said that the aim of the women's institutes was self-expres-sion, and this was helped by the drama and music circles and the competition tables. For the women with business ability their opportunity came in learning to conduct institute meetings. Mrs. Blackmore said that a cup to be known as the Mowbray Cup, in memory of the late Miss J. A. Mowbray, a president of the Victoria League, had been donated by the league for competition among the institutes. It would be used in music competitions and would be competed for next November. It was announced by Mrs. Stanley Phillips, who judged the. contest for the Dorman banner, that the winning institute was Silverdale.
