SPORTSMAN'S DEATH
MR. R. L. CLELAND.
TURF SUCCESS RECALLED.
For many years well known in sporting and theatre circles, Mr. Robert Louis Cleland, of Calliope Road, Devonport, died in an Auckland private hospital to-day at the age of 80 years.
Born in England, Mr. Cleland left for Australia at the age of about 18. He came to New Zealand in the late 'nineties, and for many years farmed at Dargaville and in other districts. Later, Mr. Cleland owned a tobacconist s business on the corner of Queen Street and Customs Street East.
He was the owner of the old King George picture theatre, later known as the National, and became very well known in theatre circles. At this time he resided at Stanley Bay. Mr. Cleland retired about 1917. All his life he took a keen interest in horse racing, and his horse Apologue, won the Melbourne Cup in 1907 in record time. Mrs. Cleland died about 11 years ago, and Mr. Cleland is survived by two sons and two daughters.
