As a hospital ship the Maunganui is planned for the needs of 00S persons, including 387 patients. 104 members of tho military hospital staff, and a crew of 117 officers and ratings. The patients will be accommodated in 12 airy wards of varying sizes on three decks, the largest having cots for i>.~> patients.

Since the Maunganui will be operating in war zones, she has been given protection again mines. The ship is fitted with "degaussing" equipment to render her immune from magnetic mines and also with paravane gear to deal with moored or floating mines.
