Backers ot favourites at tlie opening of tiie Avondale Jockey Ciub s meeting on Saturday had a most unsuccessful time, as Lou was the only one ot them to justify the confidence ot their supporters, l iist oi all, Wharemanea, something like a to 1 shot, won the hurdles from Priyal and Hackenschmidc, the favourites finishing out of a place, and then Prince l\ewa took the Kosebank Handicap to return a dividend of nearly £100. Once again the first fancy with speculators was unplaced. This was Sealaw. As though that were not enough, Te Huka then defeated Royal Son and Heroic Star in tiie Chevalier Handicap, paying over a score. Both Prince Rewa and Te Haka ate owned and trained by the Matamata sportsman. Air, J. Clothier, and they are by Spear Dance. Mr. Clothier thought that Prince Rewa would run a good race, jut he was by no means confident of success. so he split his £3 investment, having £2 tor a win and £3 for a place. He then bet up on Te Haka, but not before he told an interviewing "Star"' representative to put 10,' on the horse. Which is exaetlv what the scribe did not do. having a spot of work first to accomplish. Just shut out!
