SERVICE CORPS.
TROPHY PRESENTED. GIFT FOR COMPETITION. After a period of training- which lias continued steadily since the outbreak of war, members of the Women's National Service Corps, whose smartness has already aroused favourable comment in Auckland, are rapidly acquiring l a degree of military precision which must be extremely gratifying to their commanding officer, Miss D. M. Hawkins.
All units have attained a very high degree of efficiency, and members of the Transport section, which transported repatriated troops to Papakura recently, are now undertaking thorough training in mechanics at the Seddon Memorial Technical College. All members of this unit are experienced drivers, and many of them also hold their heavy driving licenses.
The signallers, who look particularly smart with their distinctive blue and white patches, are also making excellent progress, and several of them will soon be wearing the (lags which indicate that they have attained the required standard in both morse and semaphore. In addition to the bi-weeklv parades, these jrirls are taking special classes on Thursday ni<rht~. Last Saturday afterfioon. after parade. Miss Hawkins announced that Mr. Desmond Davis had presented a trophy for inter-platoon competition. This trophy, which will be held for two months, and then competed for again. is to be awarded for smartness, regularity of attendance and discipline. A shield for inter-company competition lias also been given. In view of the smartness of all units, the contests should be keen. Further opportunity for friendly rivalry will be given by the formation of basketball and hockey teams within the different platoons.
