N.Z. FLYER.
BRAVE LEADERSHIP.
D.S.O. FOR TIMARU MAN.
(Reed. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON", April 16,
The citation of the award of the D.S.O. to Acting-Wing Corrfmander Samuel Charles Ehvorthy, a son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Ehvorthy, of Gordon's Valley, South Canterbury, states that in March he was detailed to attack enemy shipping at Le Havre. He sighted two enemy tankers escorted by a flagship, and proceeded to attack one tanker from a low altitude, and despite heavy and accurate fire from the flagships, he set fire to the tanker.
On another occasion when returning from a successful attack against an enemy dump at Flushing aerodrome he
was attacked bv two Messerscli mitts 109, but, although his rear-gunner was wounded, ho managed, by skilful flying, to throw off the Messerschmitts and safely reached his base. Wing-Com-mander Elworthy's magnificent leadership and complete disregard of danger has 'brought his squadron to the highest pitch of war efficiency. Acting-Wing Commander Elwortliy joined the Auxiliary Flying Corps in London, and early in 1930 joined the Royal Air Force and was given IS months' seniority in the Permanent Air Force. Chiefly for his work in instruction in night bomibing ho was awarded the Air Force Cross. He next gained the Distinguished Flying Cross.
