£2250 DONATED.
POLITICAL CAMPAIGN.
LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCE.
"This is election year and there may be a few who look to the future with some misgivings, but, for my part, I have no doubt whatever as to the future of our party," said Mr. J. Roberts, national president, in his address to the annual conference of the New Zealand Labour party to-day. The conference' set up a special committee representative of all sections of the political and industrial movement in the Dominion to raise funds for a general election campaign. It was announced that the first donation to the campaign fund had been made by the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union, which had given £2*250.
Both Mr. Roberts' report and that of the national executive dealt with the political situation, but apparently they passed over any suggestion of moves from any source for a coalition of the political forces of the Dominion in view of the grave situation at the present time.
The executive report stated that the executive reaffirmed its faith in political democracy and in the common sense of the people, and asserted that with their mandate Labour would continue to progress with courage and determination unswervingly against factious opposition or obstruction.
Of the party's political opponents it was declared that they were as bankrupt of ideas for constructive planning as ever.
