SHUNTING YARDS.
NOT TOTAL BLACKOUT. Though plan? arc being made for a greater degree of 'blackout in railway yards the Minister of Railway?, the Hoii. R. Semple, stated this afternoon in an interview that it was not intended to have a total blackout in shunting-yards. People could not expect that, ho' raid. Tt would lead to an appalling number of accidents.
"We are not going to turn the shunt-ing-yards into a slaughter house," lie declared.
Mr. fck-mple said that the application of the blackout to raii«ay operation* would probably require a new system of operation, scientifically designed to achieve a minimum degree of lighting with a maximum degree of safety. That question was being investigated.
